It Started with a Fork

The early days of building Fable

In December 2023, I had a thought that wouldn't leave me alone. ChatGPT had just burst onto the scene, and suddenly everyone was talking about what AI could do. I'd been playing with large language models, voice synthesis, and image generation - mostly just tinkering, seeing what was possible. And one night it hit me: what if you could combine all three into a single experience? What if anyone could describe a story and have it come to life - narrated, illustrated, the whole thing? So I started building. And honestly, building an AI storytelling app in late 2023 was like digging a hole with a fork. The tools existed, but barely. Voice synthesis sounded like a GPS giving directions to a funeral. Image generation could make beautiful standalone pictures, but ask it to draw the same character twice and you'd get two completely different people. And the narratives? Bland, formulaic, the kind of stories that feel like they were written by a committee that had never actually met a child.

The Fork Got Sharper

But here's the thing about building something at the edge of what's possible - the edge keeps moving. Every few weeks, something would get better. A new voice model would come out that actually sounded human. Image generation would improve just enough that I could start getting semi-consistent characters if I prompted it exactly right. The LLMs got smarter, more creative, better at understanding what makes a story actually fun to listen to. I was building the plane while flying it, and the parts kept upgrading mid-flight. Every improvement in the underlying AI tools meant I could push Fable a little further. What started as a single image with some narrated text became multi-scene stories. Then those scenes got consistent characters. Then the narration got expressive. Each breakthrough felt like trading in my fork for a slightly better fork - and eventually for something that could actually dig.

Obsessing Over What Makes a Great Story

Breaking down what makes a great story

I became obsessed with one question: what actually makes a story great? Not good - great. The kind of story that makes a kid say "again!" the second it ends. The kind that makes an adult tear up unexpectedly. I studied Disney films, Pixar shorts, classic children's books, audiobook performances. I realized that a great story isn't just words on a page. It's pacing - knowing when to speed up and when to let silence breathe. It's camera angles - a wide shot for adventure, a close-up for emotion. It's music that rises and falls with the narrative. It's a character whose face you know, whose expressions you can read, who feels like someone real. None of these things existed in AI storytelling when I started. I had to build every single one of them.

Everyone Wants a Story

When I first launched Fable, I was focused on parents making bedtime stories for their kids. That seemed like the obvious use case. But something interesting happened - people started using it for everything. A teacher made stories to explain historical events to her class. A guy created a Pokemon-style adventure narrated in the style of David Attenborough (incredible, by the way). A woman going through cancer treatment made herself a story about overcoming a great challenge, and told me it made her cry in the best way. Grandparents started making stories for grandchildren they couldn't visit. Friends made ridiculous birthday stories for each other. I realized I'd been thinking too small. It's not just parents and kids. Everyone wants a story. From toddlers to adults, from bedtime tales to heartfelt gifts - storytelling is universal. Fable just makes it accessible.

Keeping It Simple

One thing I've refused to compromise on is simplicity. There are a hundred features I could add that would make the app more complicated and probably impress tech reviewers. But that's not the point. The point is that anyone - your grandmother, your five-year-old, your friend who "doesn't do technology" - should be able to create an incredible story without a tutorial. Create a character. Give some context about what the story should be about. Pick a narrator and art style. Boom - under 5 minutes, you have a fully narrated, illustrated, musically scored story. That's it. That simplicity is deliberate, and I protect it fiercely. The magic should feel effortless, even though there's an enormous amount of engineering behind the curtain.

The Vision: Your Own Disney Film

The future of AI storytelling

Here's where I think this is all heading: by the end of this year, I believe everyone will be able to create their own Disney-quality film with themselves in it. Not a janky, obviously-AI-generated clip - a real, emotionally resonant, beautifully animated story that could sit alongside anything a major studio produces. That's the trajectory we're on. The tools are getting better at a pace that's hard to overstate. And Fable is positioned right at the center of it, because we've spent over two years figuring out what actually matters in storytelling. The technology is the engine, but knowing how to use it to tell a great story - that's the real competitive advantage.

Honest About the Cost

I'll be straight with you - Fable isn't cheap. I know that, and it bothers me. Every story you create involves multiple AI models working together: one generating the narrative, another creating consistent artwork for every scene, another producing expressive narration, another composing background music. All of that costs real money, and I refuse to cut corners on quality. You're not getting a bargain-bin experience with robot voices and inconsistent characters. You're getting the best AI storytelling available, period. That said, I'm actively working on ways to make Fable more accessible. More pricing options, more flexibility. I want everyone to be able to use this, not just people who can afford a premium subscription. It's a work in progress, and I appreciate everyone's patience while I figure it out.

A Story for Everyone

Whether you're a writer looking for a new creative outlet, a parent wanting to make bedtime unforgettable, a grandparent searching for the perfect gift, someone going through a tough time who needs to escape into a story, or just a person who thinks it would be really cool to hear a story about themselves narrated by a voice that gives you chills - Fable has a story for you. I pour my heart into this app every single day. Every 3am debugging session, every obsessive tweak to the narration pacing, every "just one more thing" before I go to sleep - it's all because I genuinely believe storytelling is one of the most powerful things humans do, and AI can make it accessible to everyone. Thanks for being part of this journey. The best stories are still ahead of us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I create a story based on something my child actually did?

Absolutely - those make the best stories. "My kid tried to dig to China with a fork" is a perfectly valid prompt. The more specific and personal the idea, the better the story. Real moments from your child's life make the most memorable personalized stories.

How specific can AI story prompts be?

As specific as you want. You can describe exact scenarios, include real details from your child's life, name their friends or pets, and set it in familiar places. The AI works with whatever you give it. More detail produces better, more personal results.

What is an AI story maker?

An AI story maker is an app that uses artificial intelligence to create stories based on your prompts. Fable is an AI story maker specifically designed for children - it generates personalized stories with illustrations, narration, and music where your child is the main character.
